How Exercise Will Improve Your Golf Game

exercises to improve your golf game

Did you know that golfing surged in popularity in 2020? More people got out onto the green to play a few holes and realized how fun this underrated sport is.

While golfing is a great way to socialize with friends and relax, it's also good for your physical fitness. That's right, using golf for fitness may not replace a trip to the gym, but it can fit into your weekly exercise routine.

We're here to talk all about the health benefits of golf. Read on to learn more.

Enhanced Strength

Believe it or not, if you take your golf games seriously, you can improve your strength while you're on the green.

It takes shoulder and back strength to effectively hit a ball for distance. You'll also start building strength in your quads and calves as you walk across the golf course.

Consider ditching the golf cart once in a while to build more strength.

Great Core Stability

Did you know that you're working on your abs while you're playing golf? While it's true that golf is no substitute for an ab-focused workout, you are working small muscles and building core strength.

When you focus on your balance and stability while you play, and make an effort to pull in or flex your core while you swing, you'll be improving your core strength.

Better core strength will give you better posture and more balance in your day-to-day life.

Flexibility and Mobility

Golf has a lot to do with flexibility and mobility. When it comes to improving fitness, these are two things that many frequent exercisers neglect. Believe it or not, better flexibility and mobility will prevent future injuries and may keep you healthier for longer.

Every good golfer knows that they have to stretch if they want to have a good swing. Active stretching before the game and a good cool-down after the game will improve your overall flexibility.

You're also working on flexibility and mobility as you swing the golf club. You're giving your back and shoulders a good active stretch.

Make sure not to stretch too much while you're playing if you haven't warmed up first.

Good Aerobic Exercise

Did you know that the CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise every day? Yes, that sounds like a lot, but a day of golfing might be enough as long as you walk quickly from hole to hole.

If you're dawdling or spending your time on the course sharing a few drinks with friends, you won't get as much of an aerobic benefit. That said, it will still be a good addition to your exercise routine.

Play Golf for Fitness

Playing golf for fitness is a lot of fun. You don't have to waste hours walking on a treadmill or phoning it in at the gym. Get out on the green and play a few holes with your friends to start taking advantage of the physical health benefits of golf.
